Onside Appropriate Adult Scheme supports vulnerable adults when
they have been detained by the police for interview. People with
mental ill health and/or learning disabilities may be particularly
vulnerable to the distress and pressures caused by the experience
of arrest and police detention. Onside offers the support of an
'appropriate adult' to people who find themselves in such situations.
This is a responsible adult who is independent of the police and
whose role is to:
• look after the detained person's welfare
• explain police procedures
• provide information about their rights and ensure that these are
protected
• facilitate communication with the police
The Appropriate Adult Scheme operates in Kidderminster, Redditch
and Worcester police stations seven days-a-week between the hours
of 9.00am and 9.00pm.
If you would like any further information about the scheme or about
becoming an appropriate adult, please contact the Scheme Co-ordinator,
Sarah Newnes, on 01905 27525 or email: appropriateadult@onside-advocacy.org.uk
