Board of Trustees

An effective charity is run by a clearly identifiable board or trustee body that has the right balance of skills and experience, acts in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries, understands its responsibilities and has systems in place to exercise them properly.

I am a long-standing volunteer with Onside and joined the Board in 1996.  I have served as Secretary and Treasurer and am currently the Chair.  I have wide experience in the voluntary sector including being Chair and Vice Chair of the Worcester & District Community Health Council.

I worked as a head teacher for 13 years in two Worcestershire schools and took early retirement in order to spend more time with my 90+ mother and my two year old grand-daughter. I wanted to offer my skills to the voluntary sector and quickly found Onside, where I trained as a volunteer advocate. The work is varied and absorbing; the organisation is one I feel proud to be associated with.  It is through the contact I have had with Onside’s users that I have realised just how much positive difference can be made to a person’s quality of life. As a trustee it is my ambition to ensure the continued development of the essential services Onside provides.  I am currently the Company and Board Secretary.

Having worked with vulnerable people over the last 10 years, I know how important Onside work is and I am committed to supporting and growing that work. My partnerships with service users have given me first-hand experience of the benefits Onside can bring to the less able.  In 1996 I volunteered with Riding for the Disabled and from 2001 worked with Barnardo's as a sessional worker taking children with disabilities out, which I still do. I went on to work full time in residential and supported living homes for 6-8 years with adults with learning disabilities until I retired.  My earlier working life was spent working in accounts and wages departments and I am currently Onside's Treasurer.

I am a retired scientist with an interest in the links between health, exercise and the natural world.  Over the last few years, I have volunteered for a number of local organisations, with an emphasis on working outdoors.  Since becoming a volunteer with Onside, I have supported a number of vulnerable people and have particularly enjoyed helping to establish the Beacon Garden in Malvern.  I joined the board of Onside in 2009

Having been introduced to Onside by a member of the management team, I was immediately impressed by the energy and passion of the staff and volunteers. I worked at a senior strategic level in large organisations, both as an employee and as a consultant.  It is good to know that my background in organisational, leadership and team development can be helpful to Onside as it continues to grow and manage change.  I joined the Board in 2011.

I joined Onside in 2011, at a time in my life when I wanted to provide a contribution to the local community. Having become a volunteer I quickly became involved in several of the projects. I joined the board of Trustees in 2012; it was at this point I was introduced to the numerous projects and many wonderful things this charity carries out for vulnerable people in the community.

I have worked as a secondary school teacher and in education and children’s services in local government in both metropolitan and shire authorities. I have also worked for private education companies and have been self-employed. I believe that Onside’s commitment to equality and supporting those who face significant challenges in their lives is of huge importance, especially in current times. As I have spent many years working, for example, with children excluded from school, ethnic minority young people and students with special educational needs, Onside feels the right place for me to be.

I joined Onside as a Trustee in 2013. I was keen to become involved in a charity that had a passion to put the needs and rights of vulnerable people first. Onside fits that description perfectly. I currently practice as a Solicitor in a Birmingham and have worked within the health and social care sector for the past 20 years. I look forward to working with Onside, being part of the growth and development of the organisation and ensuring that support is provided to those that need it most.
